Our talent team spoke to Mark Pastuszka about life as a developer at ENSEK.
What has your ENSEK journey been like so far?
I started in October 2019 and it’s been pretty varied so far. I’ve worked with different teams on various areas of ENSEK’s Ignition Platform and other parts of the product, and it’s been a really great learning experience. My last role was in education technology, and before that I was fresh from my Masters, so there was a lot of learning about the industry when I first started.
What drew you to ENSEK initially?
After facing redundancy, I was looking for a new role that would leave me room to grow, at a company that was really going places, but still holding onto that community feel. I felt that the minute I toured the office and fell in love with ENSEK.
Tell me what a typical day is like for you
First thing in the morning I’ll catch up on any news that’s going round, check my emails and messages. Then we’ll have our morning stand up, find out what the whole team is doing and whether there is anything we can help each other out with. Once we’ve done that I’ll be getting on with some coding, code reviews, and looking into any upcoming items that need to be refined so they’re in a good state to be worked on. We also have virtual coffee breaks since we’ve been working from home, which I like to go to most days to get some variety in who I speak to. These have been great in terms of getting to know people in different roles across the business.
What’s the best thing about your job, and why?
I’d definitely say the best part is the people, and I know I’m not alone in thinking that. We’ve got an outstanding team here at ENSEK. I’m fortunate to spend my days working with a fantastic mix of developers, testers, business analysts, product owners, product managers… they really make it not feel like work!
What do you miss about pre-pandemic life at ENSEK?
I miss being in a busy office with lots going on and that constant buzz! I can’t answer this question without saying I also really miss the pub on a Friday afternoon. I was made the official pub club contact after only two months here for a reason!
What has improved over the pandemic?
We’re much better at collaboration, between both team members and with other teams. Previously, if one of us was struggling with an issue it may have been slightly difficult to get help, waiting for everyone to be in the same room at the right time and come to a consensus. Now we’ll jump on a quick call and sort it there and then.
ENSEK are always looking out for quality developers at all levels, whether based near HQ in Nottingham or slightly further afield. If you’re looking for a new challenge, head to our Careers page to apply.
